What is “nofollow”?
Nofollow is an attribute that can be added to links to discourage comment spam. It is used with the rel= “nofollow” attribute in a link. The concept for the specification of the attribute value ”nofollow” was designed by Googles head of web spam team Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen from Blogger.com in 2005.
What Google says in its official blog on “nofollow”?
If you’re a blogger or a blog reader, and knows about simple SEO tactics of leaving URL anywhere on web to increase traffic, then you would become familiar with “Nofollow” attribute. You’re familiar with blog owners who try to raise their own websites’ search engine rankings (pagerank) by submitting linked blog comments like “Visit my free weight loss program site.” This is called comment spam.
When Google goes through the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when Google rank websites in their search engine results. “Nofollow” provides a way for webmasters to tell search engines “Don’t follow links on this page” or “Don’t follow this specific link”. It is just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists. Spammer’s works with spam comment to not only get the rise in page rank, but also to get the direct traffic from links
Linking structure for “nofollow” and normal link
Link with nofollow:

What is dofollow?
Dofollow is the opposite of “nofollow”. Dofollow links are links which help you improve your search engine ranking results as they don’t have no follow attribute in hyperlinks. These links passes all important authority credit to links they follow. Dofollow links are links which help you improve your search engine ranking results.
Dofollow link:

But hang on a code, is this right? You are probably wondering where the dofollow linking strategy is in that piece of code. Well there is no actual dofollow tag. It is just a term used to describe the opposite of nofollow. It is same as normal link. All authority credit like page rank, blog authority, anchor text

Ah thanks for pointing out the firefox add-on!
I noticed when I went from nofollow to follow the amount of blogspam I received jumped 400%, although since it was from a single website the website in question is now blocked.
Personally I think dofollow is better for blogs, and nofollow is better for websites because of spam.
