What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is another way of making money online. In such type of marketing there is a third party other than customer and merchant who is known as affiliate. Merchant pays commission to affiliate only when it produce some result for the merchant.
You can earn money online by sending paying customers to online merchants. Merchant pays you only when you make some sale. Of course, if you don’t make a sale, you don’t get paid.
What is affiliate links?
In internet marketing affiliate links works as street address of shoppers. As an affiliate your work is to send more customers to the merchants shop. That mean you have to send business to merchant with special kind of link known as affiliate link.
Once you’ve signed up, the merchant sends you a confirmation email that will tell you how to operate the program and gives you a special link. Your job is to put this special link on your website layout, in an email, or even in your other online promoting programs. Your work is to get the valuable visitors for your site that will click the link and buy the product.
What is affiliate Id?
How does the merchant know that affiliate should be paid, and not someone else? The merchant knows you because the link contains special code. This code is a unique set of numbers or letters. It’s called your “affiliate ID.” The code is works as a signature of you and helps you to get paid for sale.
What are cookies?
Cookies are pieces of information sent by a server to a browser and OS that the browser software is expected to save and return back to the server-side whenever the browser makes additional requests from the server.
You need to know about “cookies.” for affiliate program. Cookies are small programs files given to a visitor’s web browser when they click your affiliate link. The cookie stores information of affiliate on customer’s computer.
This information identifies you as the affiliate whenever the visitor returns to the merchant’s site. Cookies generally last for certain predefine period of time, but not for the life time. After sometime they gets expire. Till they expire carries affiliate information, and keep the credit for affiliate. Cookie record can also be “reset” if the visitor clicks on a different affiliate link after they follow your link.
It depends on how the tracking system and algorithm is set up. With most of big programs, the commission is given to last affiliate just before the sale takes place. With different affiliate program the cookie rule and tracking rule gets change. You sent the lot of visitors through your link toward merchants shop, and they just visited merchant without any shopping. After this, if visitors go to same merchant from others affiliates link and result in sale, then you are not eligible for commission.
How cookies limits your commision?
There are more reasons by which cookies will get expires. When some viruses affect customers’ computer, they need to clean it. Of course cookies would get clear.
Of course, if a customer gets a new computer system or they change their operating system, then the cookies will die. Resetting cookie mean resetting your affiliate business.
The visitor might delete the cookie. In that case, the original record will lost and will only be restored if the visitor goes through one of that affiliate partners links again.
The visitor may use more than one computer system. If the visitor makes the original purchase from a one computer, but makes subsequent purchases from another computer, the second computer sales will not be credited as your record stored in first one. This would happens in large computer networked office, or in gaming-shops.
Many affiliate programs allow their affiliates to be tracked for 15 to 90 days only. This is maximum tracking period, after which they don’t consider affiliate records from cookies.
There are many program which works on pre-define cookie rule for commission. They are listed below. Numbers may vary.
Same day sale– maximum (75% to 90%)
Sale within one month since the first visit — 20%
sale within 31-60 days — 3%
sale within 61-89 days — 2%
sale on last day of limit period after the first visit — minimum (0.2% to 0.5%)
After maximum cookie limit period– “sorry!! No commission for you”
This is the reason why affiliates like to join the program which allows maximum cookie life period. Otherwise your cookies will makes your taste sour.
